Tweak ext3 a little

A quick tip to improve performance on an ext3 based file system. Change from the default Ordered(file contents are written to disk before associated meta-data is marked as committed in the journal. default with ext3) method of journaling to the Writeback method (meta-data is journaled but file-contents are not.) Writeback is much faster but you can get out of order writes after a crash, so dont do it on a production level system. Here’s how: (note: I highly recommend making a back up of your filesystem before you attempt this. Otherwise, I offer no warranty with this :) )

sudo nano /etc/fstab

Now, you should see a similar line to this:

/dev/hdc2 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro,noatime, 0 1

That’s the mount line of your filesystem for the root system. After the last mod entry (noatime,) in this case, type the following:

data=writeback

After entering the line, hold down Ctrl+O to write out the line to /fstab, and finally type Ctrl+X to quit nano. I fully recommend using nano over one of the various GUI editors like kate or gedit, primarly because there’ll come a time when you need to be able to use a text based editor.

Finally, we need to change the actual journaling mode of ext3 to writeback through the following:

sudo tune2fs - o journal_data_writeback /dev/hdc2 (replace hdc2 with ur drive)

Thats it, if you wish to double check its switched just type

sudo tune2fs -I /dev/hdc2

CNN has destroyed itself

I’ve spent most of the day watching CNN and some people might wonder why because of their past record in regards to journalistic integrity in regards to the war in Iraq and various other situations. The reason is in regards to the absolutely massive and record setting hurricane Wilma. In regards to past hurricanes like Katrina and its successors they’re one of the few news stations that devoted coverage entirely to hurricanes. Thats the reason I tuned in; even the Weather Channel didn’t have such comprehensive coverage.

However, if you’ve been watching CNN they’ve spent far more time covering a murder in Cali. Yes, a murder involving one person, in one place. A murder that, as of this time, had almost no information regarding it.

Many people, including myself are asking what makes this murder so special. What makes it worth hours of media coverage, on CNN itself!?!

The reason? It was a rich lawyer family and an arrest was made of a 16 yr old boy. Thats right, you can already see connections to Columbine and various other school shootings. Or atleast, thats what the media is attempting to draw conclusions from.

I’ve been watching CNN since roughly 3 p.m. today. Half the coverage has been dedicated to New Orleans, and half to this murder case which occured this past weekend. A tiny sliver dedicated to the potentially devistating hurricane known as Wilma.

So what has irritated me so much about the murder in Cali? Well, lets see. First of all, CNN is grasping at straws. They’ve become obsessed with rumors that the 16 yr old arrested was engaged in credit card fraud because the police department had been monitering the individual as a fringe individual. Whats more, they said he mail ordered weed seeds, growing products, etc. but no evidence has been presented.

Whats more, CNN just recently presented an interview with a “fellow student” who was obviously a member of the “popular” crew who said how the student who was arrested always dressed in black, black trench coat, etc. and said he never tried to “fit in.” Im sorry, welcome to the fuckin goth crowd. No, the majority of them are not Satan worshipers (like Larry King tried to link) NOR are they evil individuals intent on harm. In fact, most of them are just interested in different ideals. Aka, they dont fit in. Aka, the popular crowd (which Im 99% sure most of Cali students are obsessed with) dont see them as “normal” individuals. Which in of itself is a misnomer.

As the panel of four interviewies that CNN collected not a SINGLE one announced guilt in their conversations. EVERY single said that there’s far more here in this case than meets the eye and far more to be discovered. Yet CNN, in all their “objectivity,” were begging for someone to slam and for a sensational story.

Seriously, in these days who can we trust in the media? More and more I believe that there’s absolutely no one in the mainstream media that we can believe in and trust in. Because all they care about is ratings. All they care about is one upping each other. Actually, the only media I trust these days is the independents.

The only media I trust is the personal, private, online individuals who are actually there. Yes, thats right, I said it. The only people I trust are the ones involved. Every mainstream media concept is polluted with political and financial beliefs. Frankly, to be honest and off the wall, the mainstream media can go fuck itself. Cause I’m not buyin in anymore.

Say goodbye to the advertisin guys. Get with the program. Your time has come and gone.

Linux: Shutdown

Its a sad fact that many of the Linux man pages aren’t worth crap unless you have a degree in understanding greek. The Shutdown command is one that does not benefit from their rather obtuse language. So, for those that stumble at the same point I was:

shutdown [argument] [-t secs] time

the -t is only to be used if you’re specifiying an actual daily time for the system to shutdown. If you want the system to go down now, then you would replace “time” with “now.”

That is all
