Ya know, I keep comin back to the thought that if Bush wants to make gay marriage illegal for various reasons, why stop there? Why not make divorce illegal? I mean, you make marriage sacred there. People aren’t going to treat it like crap, aren’t going to look down on it and there sure as hell won’t be a 53% divorce rate among straights anymore…
Oh, wait. Gays spit on the sanctity of marriage right? Hmmm, honestly I think straight people do that pretty well themselves. I dunno, I’m torn. In some respects I want to vote for Bush because I think he is the only candidate who will even consider the “War on Terror” an important thing; even if I disagree in how its being waged. On almost every other policy I disagree with him though. Is one issue enough? Michele seems to think it is, and others agree thats for sure.
For me, I’m still torn.
I’ve spent the past few days poking around on my system, posting in forums, lurking in IRC channels and all for naught. It looks like my Outlook data after December 8th is real and truely gone. I actually lost quite a bit, more than I should have but I guess we all learn at one point or another.
The good news is that I got my RLO information re-sent so I can sign up for housing tonight (due date is tomorrow). I also have my RMA information for Newegg quasi-taken care of. Possibly the best news of all, however, is that I saved $40 today by being a tad thrifty. Newegg had a sale on the motherboard I bought, the Abit AN7 from Microcenter. The reason I save $40 is because at Newegg its $94 and I paid over $130 for it at Microcenter. Yea, once that babe arrives at my house the current one is so going back to Microcenter. I don’t care about being nice, its $40!
Also got some cool news that its basically positives now that Liz and Hannah are coming to hang out. Good times. Alot of this will be news to readers at TA but thats because I’m posting personal stuff elsewhere. Thought it’d be reasonable to post some updates here too in the interm.
The primary reason for the post here though is to mention that I’m finally making the full time switch to Linux. Windows is still keeping a minor partition on my drive but thats to play games and do the programming I’ll need come spring/summer term. Otherwise, its Linux all the way. Goodbye Windows (and Outlook), you failed us well.
Ever wonder what an anthropological study would make of our American culture? Well, here’s a spoof that actually seems pretty accurate. Its sad, I seriously couldn’t figure out whether to laugh or cry. If ya got a few minutes, check this out

As some of you may know, on Feb. 12th San Francisco truely defied the United States government on a scale that, to me, was not previously known. On Feb. 12th, the city married over 825 gay/lesbian/trans-gender couples.
Despite. The. Law.
Today the city faces two different lawsuits from members of the religious right trying to deny human beings a simple, civil right that really has nothing to do with religion. Please, someone make it stop.
Anyways, here’s a site with pictures from all the days. You can’t help but smile at the happiness displayed, smile and maybe even shed a tear to see people’s dreams finally coming true. The dreams that they should be allowed, that is guaranteed by our constitution but is being with held by a small, ignorant and bigoted elite.
I just had a sudden thought on poetry. Its funny that the thought actually doesn’t come from any thought on poetry, but rather the almost-pissing contest that’s gone on between Shelly, Joi Ito, and Liz about a few community things and relating to a picture posted on Marks weblog (links later).
Anyways, they talked about writing for audiences and communities and suddenly I thought that with poetry, aren’t you degrading it if you write just for yourself, in a vacuum and never show the poetry to anyone else?
I mean, poetry is meant to expose emotions, thoughts, and situations in ourselves and in others. Writing it can often be therapeutic but…if you stop there then what’s the point of actually writing it down. You’ve basically killed it, its non-sequitur.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that is there a point to poetry written and displayed in silence?
Sam isn’t the only one who’s been having computer problems though mine are mostly self-inflicted. I got the geek itch the other week and bought an nForce2 board for pretty cheap refurbished from Newegg but it appears that the board was a bit of a dude. Or so I thought. Ended up putting my old board back in the system to try and fix the problem only to find out…my hard drive wouldn’t boot.
At this point I feared the worst so I threw in a 40Gb drive I had sitting on the side, attempted to install Linux only to get…IDE corruption errors. It struck me then that I’d seriously pissed off the computer gods and, after sacrificing a small iMac to appease their anger, I attempted again.
Yea, it failed. Again. *Start worlds smallest violin playing just for me*
Lets tally up the score now, shall we? Original SiS 735 Aopen board not in commission. Brand new nForce2 board from DFI is DOA. My 120Gb hard drive from Western Digital, my babe with all my data, not working either. Yea, I was feeling the pain.
So yesterday my roommate and I drove out to Microcenter and after much debating I purchased the Abit N7A nForce 2 board. It had everything I wanted (except onboard IDE RAID but I still have my add-on card) and came from a big name manufacturer. I figured, how could I go wrong?
In the end, my system boots into windows. Its running dual channel memory with a stick of 512Mb PC2100 and a stick of 256Mb PC3200 which…isn’t supposed to be possible. The board also says the other stick of 256Mb PC3200 I have is bad, no big loss I guess. However, the strangest problems are with the boards BIOS. It swears my processor is running at 11c which frankly is just loony. I’ve been reading some reviews of the board now (after the fact of course) and a lot of them have mentioned that the board could rule but the BIOS blows. Great, I picked the one lemon from Abit. Hell, as long as it works, it doesn’t crap itself and I can install Linux on it I’m happy.
Now if I can just get my data off the 120Gb drive…
Is anyone else getting fed up with the Janet Jackson, Superbowl crap that the public is obsessing about? I missed the half time show because I had better things to do than listen to the idiots sing badly live but I’ve seen more high-res photos of the action than I care to shake a stick at. With each picture I see I’m left with an ever greater feeling of that borders along that of the criminally angry. What the hell is wrong with America?
This has galvanized the American public like nothing short of 9/11. People are making this out to be one of the biggest things to disgrace the channels in years. Umm, it was a tit right? Look at the pictures people – you see more skin (and better, I might add) in your average rap video. What’s the problem here? We have the FCC investigating and the mommies and daddies going crazy. What is the problem?
The basic argument goes that mommies and daddies all over America don’t want their poor little babies to see a little bit of boob. Why? Because it “desensitizes” them and gives them a decreased worth of themselves; oh, that and its immoral. I’m sure we’ll also see reports from the religious right about how it’ll lead to increased violence against everyone and especially more rapes. Paaaaleeease.
Your average English sit-com shows quite a bit more than even Showtimes soft-core porn on the weekends. This was just tame and doesn’t anyone else but me see the hypocrisy of American parents? You show a tit on public television and the country goes ape. Show a murder live, or a rape, or hell people falling out of a burning building and splatting on a roof and people love it. They have no problem with that. What are we teaching our kids? Violence is ok, sex is terrible.
Wait, sex is terrible? We all came from it well except for the rare test tube babies. From what I’ve heard though very few people think sex feels bad. Very few people would try and outlaw it except for the nutty, religious right. We can show thong clad asses, we can show a man’s mostly naked body but god forbid we show a tit. Please.
America. Grow Up.
