The Perfect Email Client

It’s a sad state of the world when Microsoft really does make the best client for my needs.

I’ve been really interested lately in open-source initiatives and programs, I’ve even gotten to checking about twenty to thirty sites and feeds a day. The concept entices me and many of the programs have the possibility for greatness. However, few of them have the polish or even the feature sets that I’m currently looking for. Atleast, they don’t that I know of.

For all my email needs I use Outlook. Granted, its got a terrible track record for security and in all previous versions to even get some form of spam checking you had to download clients like SpamBayes which added quite a bit of time to startup. The newest Outlook, 2003, actually includes a decent spam filter and adds a few of the security features that should have been present for the longest time. It also still includes one of the best task list and calendar setups that I’ve seen but that doesn’t mean it’s the best. Actually, Outlook isn’t the best at a lot of things and that includes memory usage and storage of emails and organization of said emails.

Frankly, I want to switch – but I haven’t found a client that does what I need. So, I decided to make a list and see if anyone knows of an email client that does all the following.

    Client features:
    Integrated bayasian filtering for spam
IMAP, Pop3 and possible Exchange support
    NNTP capability
    RSS syndication support
Easy folder backup: Outlooks PST files blow for this and I love the idea of an easy readable text format like Mozilla mail and the like have in the .mbx format
    Multiple-account support
    Decent contacts capability
    A calendaring and task system

Its sad that the closest client to my needs there is actually Outlook once I buy a plugin to include the RSS syndication. However, it doesn’t have the NNTP support nor does it include an easy backup solution and the calendar system is just overkill for my needs. Evolution also seems to do it but its *nix only and has a load time even worse than Outlook.

You’d almost think I’d be asking for a miracle. Too bad I can’t code.
